Reporting of Lobbying in Criminal Legal Cases Bill 2011

The Bill would make it an offence for an Oireachtas member or their representative to privately lobby judges, prosecutors, prison and related officials about criminal investigations, prosecutions, sentencing, imprisonment or release, including in foreign countries. Communications would generally have to be made public or reported to the Justice Minister; breaches could bring a fine of up to €1,000, up to six months’ imprisonment, or both.

Bill entitled an Act to ensure that all communications between any member of the Oireachtas and members of the judiciary or any employee of a Department, agency, or body corporate which are entrusted with powers of prosecution or detention by this State, or members of the judiciary in foreign states, are recorded where the communicaton relates to the exercise of these powers
