Criminal Justice (Female Genital Mutilation) Bill 2011

The Criminal Justice (Female Genital Mutilation) Bill 2011 would make performing, attempting, helping or arranging female genital mutilation a criminal offence, including taking a girl or woman abroad for that purpose and, in certain circumstances, carrying it out overseas. Medical procedures needed for health or childbirth would be exempt, but custom, ritual or consent would not be a defence; courts could protect victims’ and accused people’s identities, and the offences would be treated as serious crimes affecting bail and child-protection law.
