No. 71 of 2011

Thirty-First Amendment of the Constitution (The President) Bill 2011

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Would change the rules for electing Ireland’s President by reducing the minimum age for candidates from 35 to 18 and making nominations easier: 10 members of the Oireachtas, or 10,000 voters, could put someone forward. It would shorten the President’s term from seven years to five, and allow an incoming President to make a non-religious declaration at the inauguration. The changes are intended to widen public choice, reflect Ireland’s diversity and strengthen the connection between the President and voters.
