Medical Treatment (Termination of Pregnancy in Case of Risk to Life of Pregnant Woman) Bill 2012
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Would have allowed a pregnancy to be ended where doctors considered it necessary to prevent a real and substantial risk to the pregnant woman’s life, including a risk of suicide. Two medical practitioners would generally have had to agree, with access to a second opinion and a fast appeal, while treatment could not be delayed; doctors with a genuine objection would have had to provide information and arrange prompt transfer, except in an emergency. It also proposed consent rules, protection against harassment or obstruction, and penalties of up to €2,000, 12 months’ imprisonment, or both.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for termination of pregnancy where a real and substantial risk to the life of the pregnant woman exists; to make provision for the prevention of any curtailment, hindrance or preclusion of such treatment that may arise as a result of the pregnancy of the woman; and to provide for related matters
