Medical Treatment (Termination of Pregnancy in Case of Risk to Life of Pregnant Woman) (No. 2) Bill 2012

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Would create a legal framework for ending a pregnancy where continuing it poses a real and substantial risk to the pregnant woman’s life, including a risk of suicide, meeting Ireland’s human-rights obligations. It would require medical assessment, provide appeals and consent arrangements, protect healthcare workers with genuine objections while ensuring treatment remains available, and penalise threats, coercion, harassment or obstruction.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to provide an interim legislative arrangement, as required by the Council of Europe, for termination of pregnancy where as a matter of probability a real and substantial risk to the life of the pregnant woman exists; to make provision for the prevention of any curtailment, hindrance or preclusion of such treatment that may arise as a result of the pregnancy of the woman; and to provide for related matters
