Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2012

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The Road Traffic (Amendment) Bill 2012 would make it a criminal offence to knowingly or recklessly alter a vehicle’s odometer to give a false mileage, with penalties of up to €10,000 or two years’ imprisonment. It would also prohibit offering such a vehicle for sale unless dealers had taken reasonable steps to verify its mileage, including obtaining a signed certificate from the previous owner. Knowingly signing a false mileage certificate would be a separate offence, helping buyers avoid vehicles whose mileage has been fraudulently reduced.
