Education (Welfare) (Amendment) Bill 2012
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would strengthen the National Educational Welfare Board’s role in preventing non-attendance by children enrolled in recognised schools before they turn six, including junior and senior infants. Parents who choose and secure a school place for an under-six child would then be expected to ensure daily attendance, while the existing compulsory school age of six to 16 would remain unchanged. It would not affect schools’ decisions about admissions or children educated outside recognised schools.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the further coordination of the activities of the National Educational Welfare Board or, in the Irish language, An Bord Náisiúnta Leasa Oideachais, in so far as they relate to matters connected with the prevention of non-attendance on the part of certain students registered with recognised schools and for those and other purposes to amend the Education (Welfare) Act 2000 and to provide for related matters.
