Residential Tenancies (Amendment) Bill 2012

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Landlords would have to pay tenants’ deposits to the Private Residential Tenancies Board, which would hold and return the money, or decide how it should be divided if there is a dispute over unpaid rent or damage. Rent assistance would generally be available only for registered tenancies, although initial help with a deposit or a newly created tenancy would still be allowed. The aim is to protect deposits and discourage landlords from leaving tenancies unregistered.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Residential Tenancies Act 2004 so as to provide for the payment of deposits to the Private Residential Tenancies Board in respect of tenancies required to be registered under part 7 of that act; to require further that payments of supplementary welfare allowance under the Social Welfare Acts in respect of rental payments shall be paid only in respect of a tenancy registered with the Board; and to provide for connected matters
