Assaults on Emergency Workers Bill 2012

The Assaults on Emergency Workers Bill 2012 would create specific sentencing rules for serious attacks on emergency workers while they are on duty. It covers serious assaults, threats to kill or cause serious harm, and injuries caused by piercing someone with a syringe, involving gardaí, ambulance and Civil Defence staff, firefighters travelling to or from fires, and doctors and nurses in accident and emergency departments. Adults convicted would generally face at least five years in prison, unless exceptional circumstances made that unfair; children would be excluded.
