Child Sex Offenders (Information and Monitoring) Bill 2012
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Creates a Garda scheme letting parents or guardians, and also school or club leaders, ask whether a person coming into contact with a child has a sex offence conviction or is otherwise a serious danger, so they can take protective action. It also tightens how sex offenders are monitored by requiring them to report to their local Garda headquarters more quickly and to provide fingerprints and a photograph, and it gives Gardaí power to share information on their own initiative in urgent cases. The aim is to improve child safety while keeping disclosure controlled and limited to people with a genuine need to know.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the establishment of a scheme to allow the parents or guardians of a child or vulnerable adult to make an enquiry to the Garda Síochána for the purpose of ascertaining whether a person with whom their child is in contact has been convicted of a sexual offence or is otherwise likely to pose a serious danger to children; to allow schools or clubs to make enquires to safeguard children in their care; to modernise the monitoring of sex offenders; to amend the Sex Offenders Act 2001; and to provide for related matters
