Brighter Evenings Bill 2012
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Brighter Evenings Bill 2012 would require the Minister for Justice to publish a report on the costs and benefits of moving Ireland’s clocks forward by one hour. It would then introduce a three-year trial, including a first winter without the usual clock change, followed by a permanent shift if considered appropriate—putting Ireland on Central European Time, with brighter evenings but darker mornings. Supporters said this could improve road safety, tourism, exercise, crime prevention, energy use and emissions, while recognising concerns about farming and children travelling to school.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to require the Minister for Justice to prepare and publish a report on the costs and benefits of advancing the clocks by one hour to allow for brighter evenings and to bring Ireland into the Central European Time zone; to also allow the Minister for Justice to advance the clocks by one hour for a three year trial period and then permanently if required; and for connected purposes
