Debt Collectors Bill 2013

The Debt Collectors Bill 2013 would require people, companies and partnerships collecting debts for others to register, meet suitability requirements and follow a binding code of conduct. It would create a public register and allow registration to be suspended or withdrawn for misconduct, while banning force, intimidation, deception and false claims about legal powers. Debt collectors could recover only the debt, lawful interest and approved costs, and could face fines, imprisonment or orders to compensate people affected.
