Food Provenance Bill 2013
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Food Provenance Bill 2013 would require food labels and shop signs to give consumers clearer information about when and where food was made, harvested, processed and packed. Pre-packed foods would show the countries of origin of their three main ingredients, while meat and fish would carry details such as farming or catching location, slaughter or catch date, and whether fish was wild or farmed. The Food Safety Authority could enforce the rules, with penalties for breaches or misleading provenance information; restaurant food intended for immediate consumption would generally be excluded.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to enhance the level of information which is made available to the consumers of foodstuffs and for that purpose to introduce a series of new requirements for food labelling and signage, to amend the Food Safety Authority of Ireland Act 1998 and to provide for related matters
