The Protected Disclosures Bill 2013 would protect workers who report suspected wrongdoing connected with their employment, such as illegal acts, dangers to health and safety, misuse of public funds or serious misconduct. It would provide protection against dismissal, workplace punishment, threats, harassment and other retaliation, protect the reporter’s identity where possible, and allow reports to be made through employers, designated bodies, ministers, legal advisers or, in limited circumstances, outside organisations. Public bodies would have to establish reporting procedures, while special rules would apply to sensitive security, policing and defence information.
