Parliamentary Scrutiny of Appointments (European Commission) Bill 2014
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would require the Government to give both Houses of the Oireachtas details of its preferred European Commissioner candidate at least 12 sitting days before the nomination deadline. The candidate would have to appear before the Oireachtas Joint Committee on European Union Affairs to answer questions; at least 20 members could then request a debate in each House about the candidate’s suitability. Refusing or failing to attend would count as withdrawing the nomination, requiring the Government to propose a replacement subject to the same scrutiny.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the parliamentary scrutiny of the Government's proposed candidate for appointment as a member of the Commission of the European Union and to provide for related matters
