Seanad Reform Bill 2014
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Seanad Reform Bill 2014 would retain the Seanad’s 60 members—11 nominated by the Taoiseach and 49 elected—but give every adult entitled to vote in Dáil elections one vote in Seanad elections. It would also allow eligible Irish citizens in Northern Ireland, Irish passport holders living abroad and graduates of higher-education institutions to vote, with elections held by postal ballot. The proposal would keep separate university and vocational groups, encourage representation of specified communities and interests among Taoiseach’s nominees, and set minimum numbers for women and men among elected members.
