Court of Appeal Bill 2014

Public bill · Government · Presented

Establishes a new Court of Appeal between the High Court and Supreme Court, with a president and nine judges, to hear most appeals currently handled by the Supreme Court, the Court of Criminal Appeal and the Courts-Martial Appeal Court. It sets out the court’s powers, judges’ appointments and pensions, administration, legal aid and transitional arrangements, while preserving limited Supreme Court appeals in exceptional cases. The aim is to speed up appeals and reduce the Supreme Court’s workload; setup was estimated at €2 million, with annual running costs of €2.5–3 million.
