Courts Bill 2015
Public bill · Government · Presented
The Courts Bill 2015 would allow the number of ordinary High Court judges to rise from 35 to 37. The extra judges are intended to reduce delays caused by growing numbers of cases, including judicial reviews, medical-negligence claims, asylum applications and company-law matters, as well as longer and more complex criminal trials. This could help cases be heard sooner and reduce the number of judgments and hearings awaiting completion, although it would add to public spending through judicial salaries.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to increase the number of ordinary judges of the High Court; for that purpose to amend the Courts and Court Officers Act 1995; and to provide for related matters.
