The Firearms (Amendment) Bill 2015, sponsored by Robert Dowds, would increase the presumptive minimum and maximum prison sentences for several firearms offences. These include possessing a gun to endanger life, using one to help someone escape, having a gun or ammunition in suspicious circumstances, carrying a gun or imitation gun to commit a serious offence or resist arrest, and shortening a shotgun or rifle barrel. The aim is to deter firearms crime and impose tougher punishment.
