Education (Welfare) (Amendment) Bill 2015
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would raise Ireland’s school-leaving age from 16 to 17, so young people would generally have to remain in education for an extra year. A 16-year-old could meet this requirement through a mainly educational vocational apprenticeship, and schools and families would get a one-year preparation period. The aim is to improve young people’s skills and future job prospects, although schools and the Child and Family Agency would face additional costs.
Formal long title
