Criminal Justice (Burglary of Dwellings) Bill 2015

Public bill · Government · Presented

The measure would make it easier for courts to refuse bail to adults charged with burglary of a home when they have a recent conviction and multiple other burglary charges or convictions, treating this history as evidence they may reoffend. It would also require prison terms for certain repeat domestic burglaries to run one after another rather than at the same time, although courts would still decide whether imprisonment is appropriate and how long each sentence should be. The aim is to reduce repeat home burglaries and the serious harm they cause victims.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to provide for certain matters to be taken into consideration by a court in deciding whether to refuse bail in certain circumstances; to provide for the imposition of consecutive sentences for certain offences committed in a dwelling; for those purposes to amend the Bail Act 1997 and the Criminal Justice (Theft and Fraud Offences) Act 2001; and to provide for related matters
