Commissions of Investigation (Amendment) Bill 2016

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The measure would change the rules for commissions of investigation so that evidence given in private, and documents handed over by a witness, can be disclosed or published when needed for a Garda Síochána Ombudsman Commission investigation. It also says this new rule should apply to some Ombudsman Commission investigations that were already under way when the change is made. In plain terms, it is about making certain commission evidence available for police oversight work, which could help investigations into Garda conduct.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Commissions of Investigation Act 2004 to permit the disclosure or publication of evidence given or the contents of any document produced by a witness giving evidence in private to a Commission of Investigation
