Convictions for Certain Sexual Offences (Apology and Exoneration) Bill 2016
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The bill would formally apologise to and clear the names of people who were convicted for consensual sexual acts between adult men under old laws that have since been repealed. It says those prosecutions were unfair and discriminatory, and that they violated human dignity, privacy and personal freedom. It applies only to historic convictions under the named old statutes, and it does not affect cases where the other person was under 17 or could not consent.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for an apology to and exoneration of persons convicted of consensual same-sex sexual acts, on the grounds that prosecutions for such offences were improperly discriminatory, contrary to human dignity and in breach of personal privacy and autonomy; and to provide for related matters.
