Garda Síochána (Amendment) Bill 2016

The Garda Síochána (Amendment) Bill 2016 would strengthen protection for journalists’ confidential sources. Gardaí could not intercept communications, access information or search premises in a way that might identify a source without prior High Court approval. The Court could grant permission only in exceptional circumstances where the public interest justified the intrusion, after giving the journalist a chance to respond; the journalist would not have to reveal the protected information during that process.
