Adoption (Amendment) Bill 2016
Public bill · Government · Presented
Updates Ireland’s adoption laws to reflect the constitutional changes on children’s rights and to bring the rules into one place. It would let married parents place a child for adoption together with both agreeing, extend adoption to civil partners, cohabiting couples and step-parents in defined situations, and allow adoption in some cases up to age 18. It also puts the child’s best interests first and gives greater weight to the child’s views when decisions are being made.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend and extend the law in relation to the adoption of children; and, for that purpose, to amend the Adoption Act 2010; to provide for the repeal of Part 11 of the Children and Family Relationships Act 2015; and to provide for related matters.
