No. 27 of 2016

Thirty-fifth Amendment of the Constitution (Economic, Social and Cultural Rights) Bill 2016

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

A referendum bill that would add economic, social and cultural rights to the Constitution, requiring the State to steadily improve access to those rights using the resources it has, without discrimination. It would also make that duty enforceable by the courts, rather than leaving it as guidance only. The aim is to give stronger constitutional protection to rights such as housing, health, education and other basic social supports, following earlier calls to recognise these rights more clearly in Irish law.
