Statistics (1916 Rising Centenary) Bill 2016

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would open the 1926 Census of Population to the public much earlier than the usual 100-year rule, and give it special heritage status. Its aim is to make the first census taken after the State was founded available for family history, historical, and academic research, especially as part of the 1916 centenary and wider centenary commemorations. It matters because the 1926 census covers a crucial period between independence, the Civil War, and major social change, and would fill a major gap in Ireland’s historical records.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Statistics Act 1993, in relation to the first Census of Population of Ireland taken since the establishment of the State; to afford that census a special heritage status and to have such released to the public for historical, genealogical and other research as part of the national centenary of the 1916 Rising, and the Decade of Centenaries, commemorations
