Immigration (Reform) (Regularisation of Residency Status) Bill 2016
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposed law would let some people who have been waiting four years or more for a decision on asylum, subsidiary protection, or permission to stay apply for a residence permit. That permit would last at least three years, could be renewed, and would bring practical rights such as work, travel, education, health care, social welfare, and access to the courts. It would also cover some immediate family members, but the Minister could refuse or later cancel a permit on public order, security, crime, or serious dishonesty grounds, and could still deport people in certain limited cases.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for the regularisation of the residency status of persons who have applied for refugee status and/or subsidiary protection if four years following the submission of such an application the application remains undetermined and to provide for related matters
