Garda Síochána (Appointment of Senior Officers) Bill 2016
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Transfers the appointment of the Garda Commissioner and Deputy Garda Commissioner to the Policing Authority, rather than having those senior posts filled by the current process. It says the authority must run a selection competition through the Public Appointments Service, and must be satisfied that candidates have the right experience, qualifications and suitability. It also lets the officeholders resign formally to the authority and keeps the existing commissioner and deputy commissioner in place under their current terms when the change starts.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Garda Síochána Acts 2005-2015 to provide for the appointment of persons to the ranks of Garda Commissioner and Deputy Garda Commissioner by An tÚdarás Póilíneachta
