Thirty-fifth Amendment of the Constitution (Repeal of the Eighth Amendment) Bill 2016
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would remove the constitutional rule known as the Eighth Amendment by deleting the part of the Constitution that gives equal protection to the life of the mother and the unborn. Its purpose is to clear the way for the Constitution to be changed on abortion, so the issue could then be dealt with by ordinary law rather than fixed in the Constitution. It matters because this would be a major shift in how Ireland regulates pregnancy and abortion.
