Equal Participation in Schools Bill 2016
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Aimed at ending religious discrimination in school admissions, it would remove a rule that lets schools refuse pupils on religious grounds. It would also change education law so schools focus on the constitutional and human rights of everyone in the school community, require religious instruction and faith formation to happen after core school hours, and set clearer exemptions for students who do not want to attend those classes. It would also require school teaching to be given in an objective, critical, and pluralistic way outside those religious classes.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to end religious discrimination in admission to primary and post-primary educational establishments and to provide for full participation of pupils of all faiths and none in primary and post-primary educational establishments
