No. 72 of 2016

Coroners (Amendment) Bill 2016

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

A coronial inquest could record a new verdict of “iatrogenic suicide” where a person’s own life ends and the main cause is medical treatment they received, including prescribed medicine. It also makes clear that this finding would not be used to assign civil or criminal blame. The aim is to distinguish these cases from ordinary suicide and recognise the role medical treatment may play.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Act of 1962, to provide for a verdict of iatrogenic suicide andrelated matters
