Thirty-Fifth Amendment of the Constitution (Neutrality) Bill 2016
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would change the Constitution to state clearly that Ireland is neutral and should keep a policy of not joining military alliances. It would also strengthen the existing rule that Ireland cannot declare war, join a war, or help prepare for or conduct a war or armed conflict unless Dáil Éireann agrees. It matters because it would put neutrality into the Constitution in a much more explicit way, making it harder for any future government to move away from that position.
