Island Fisheries (Heritage Licence) Bill 2017

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Creates a “heritage licence” for island fishermen who live on Ireland’s offshore islands and make a living from fishing. It would let them fish within the six-mile coastal limit around their island, while keeping the licence tied to the individual, non-transferable, and only valid while they are actively fishing from their boat. The aim is to protect and continue traditional island fishing practices, while the Minister sets the detailed rules, appeal process, licence numbers, and how the system would be run.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to provide for the issuing of heritage licences to island fishermen to facilitate the continuance of traditional fishing practices on ireland's offshore islands; and to provide for related matters.
