Education (Welfare) (Amendment) Bill 2017
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The measure would extend school-attendance rules to children under 6 who are already enrolled in a recognised school, such as junior or senior infants. If parents choose to enrol a child that young, they would have to make sure the child attends each school day, while the compulsory school age itself would remain 6 to 16. It matters because it gives the education welfare system a clearer role in preventing non-attendance among very young pupils, without changing the wider rules on when children must start school.
