Sentencing Council Bill 2017

Creates a Sentencing Council to help make criminal sentencing more consistent, while keeping judges independent. The council would issue sentencing guidelines, consult on draft guidance, review and update it, and publish information so the public and justice professionals can better understand how sentences are decided. It would also assess the impact of government policy changes on prison, probation and youth justice resources.
