Electoral (Amendment) (Voting Rights for Residents) Bill 2017
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Extends the right to vote in Dáil and European elections to any adult of voting age who has been legally living in Ireland for at least five years, provided they live in the relevant area. It would also let such residents be added to the register of voters, changing the current rules so that long-term lawful residents who are not Irish citizens can take part in these elections. The point is to widen democratic participation to people who have made Ireland their home.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the provisions of the Electoral Act 1992 to extend the right to vote in Dáil and European Elections to all adults of voting age who have been legally resident in the State for five years; and to provide for related matters.
