Petroleum and Other Minerals Development (Climate Emergency Measures) Bill 2017

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Aimed at tackling climate change, this proposal would stop the Government from issuing, renewing or extending licences to explore for or extract petroleum, natural gas or coal, whether on land or offshore. It treats high carbon dioxide levels as a climate emergency and says the ban would stay in place while global CO2 remains above a set threshold. In practical terms, it would shut down new fossil-fuel licensing as an emergency response to rising emissions.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Petroleum and Other Minerals Development Act 1960 to provide for a prohibition of the issuing of licences for the exploration and extraction of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Coal as an emergency measure to address the levels of atmospheric Co2
