Digital Safety Commissioner Bill 2017
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Creates a new Digital Safety Commissioner to oversee how online platforms and other digital services deal with harmful communications, especially taking down abusive or damaging content. It would require services to have clear complaint systems, free removal requests for affected people, set response times, and a named safety officer, while also letting users appeal to the Commissioner if a platform does not act. It matters because it aims to make online spaces safer and give people a faster, clearer way to get harmful content removed.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to establish an office of a Digital Safety Commissioner and to provide for its functions to ensure the oversight and regulation of procedures for removal, by digital service undertakings, of harmful digital communications; to provide for the creation of codes of practice for digital services undertakings; to establish an advisory committee to the Digital Safety Commissioner and to provide for related matters.
