Misuse of Drugs (Supervised Injecting Facilities) Bill 2017

It would let the Minister for Health licence supervised injecting facilities where people can inject drugs under supervision in a safer setting. People using these centres would be exempt from some drug-possession offences while there, and the licence holder would also get legal protection, but drug possession for sale or supply would still remain illegal. The aim is to reduce overdoses and other harm, protect people’s dignity and health, cut public injecting and drug litter, and make public spaces safer and cleaner.

Bill entitled an Act to provide for the establishment, licensing, operation and regulations of supervised injecting facilities for the purposes of reducing harm to people who inject drugs; to enhance the dignity, health and well-being of people who inject drugs in public places; to reduce the incidence of drug injection and drug-related litter in public places and thereby to enhance the public amenity for the wider community; and to provide for matters related thereto
