National Food Ombudsman Bill 2017

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Creates a National Food Ombudsman within the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission to help sort out disputes between big grocery retailers or wholesalers and their suppliers. The ombudsman could look into issues like contract changes, payment terms, charges for shelf space, promotion costs, wastage, and whether stores are following the grocery goods rules, and could report findings and recommendations. It matters because it gives suppliers a formal route to challenge unfair treatment in the grocery supply chain.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to establish an office of National Food Ombudsman as part of the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission; to enable the holder of that office to mediate and investigate disputes between, on the one hand, relevant grocery goods undertakings engaged in the retail or wholesale of grocery goods in the State and, on the other hand, suppliers of those goods; and to provide for related matters
