Electoral (Extension of Voting Rights to Non-Irish Citizens) Bill 2017
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The measure would let all adults who are usually living in Ireland vote in Dáil elections and European Parliament elections, even if they are not Irish citizens. It would change the current voter rules to focus on ordinary residence and age, and it includes temporary arrangements so people already on the local government register could vote in the next national or European election before the next updated register is published. This matters because it would widen the franchise to include many long-term residents who currently cannot vote in those elections.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to extend voting rights in elections to Dáil Éireann and to the European Parliament to all adults ordinarily resident in the State
