Protection of Employees (Collective Redundancies) Bill 2017
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Aimed at protecting workers when a company is closing or laying off large numbers of staff while insolvent, this proposal would strengthen employees’ chances of being paid what they are owed. It would let the High Court claw back assets that were improperly moved out of the business, give workers’ unpaid redundancy-related claims priority in liquidation, and allow the Minister to delegate recovery action to a liquidator where worthwhile. It would also require earlier consultation and disclosure in some cases where decisions by a related company could trigger redundancies, and impose penalties for non-compliance.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to provide for protections for employees in collective redundancy situations in which the employer is insolvent and to provide for related matters
