Irish Nationality and Citizenship (Restoration of Birthright Citizenship) Bill 2017

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would restore automatic Irish citizenship rights for everyone born anywhere on the island of Ireland, reversing the 2004 change that tied citizenship for some children to having an Irish parent. It would also remove related rules that go with that restriction. In plain terms, it seeks to bring back birthright citizenship for people born in Ireland, making place of birth enough to qualify for Irish citizenship.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to restore the eligibility of all persons born in the island of Ireland for Irish citizenship
