Sale of Illicit Goods Bill 2017
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
Aimed at cutting the demand that keeps smuggling profitable, this proposal would make it a crime to buy illegal alcohol, tobacco or solid fuel, or to buy those goods from a seller who is not properly registered or licensed. It would also allow an immediate €100 fine for these purchases, with stronger penalties for repeat or more serious cases, and give inspectors powers to investigate, search and work with Gardaí and Revenue. It matters because the note says smuggling is costing the economy billions and undermining jobs, tax revenue and legitimate businesses.
