Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2017
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The Local Government (Amendment) Bill 2017 would stop county boundaries from being changed unless people in the affected area vote for it in a plebiscite, and the Minister would have to follow the result. It matters because it gives local residents a direct say over whether their county status or boundary is altered, rather than leaving the decision to government alone.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Local Government Act 1991 to ensure that the county status of a community shall not be altered without the explicit consent of the majority of its electorate
