Garda Síochána (Amendment) Bill 2017

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

Gives the Policing Authority more power to oversee how the Garda Commissioner and An Garda Síochána carry out policing work. It would let the Authority order internal reviews, set binding policies and procedures, publish Garda code and operational rules where safe to do so, and inspect Garda stations or premises without warning. It also creates a stronger route for removing a Garda member if their conduct would undermine public confidence, while allowing the Government and the person concerned to be heard first.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the Garda Síochána Acts 2005 to 2015 to provide for enhanced powers to be granted to the Policing Authority for the purpose of overseeing the performance of the Garda Commissioner and the Garda Síochána of its functions relating to policing services; to amend the provisions of the Acts relating to the Garda Síochána Inspectorate; and to provide for related matters.
