Equal Status (Amendment) Bill 2017
Public bill · Private Member · Introduced
The proposal would change equality law so that publicly funded schools could not use their admissions policies to treat children differently because of their religious beliefs. Its aim is to stop discrimination in school admissions based on religion, especially where a school receives public money. That matters because school places are highly contested, and admissions rules can have a big effect on access for families of different faiths or none. The measure was introduced as a Private Member’s bill by Catherine Murphy.
Formal long title
Bill entitled an Act to amend the Equal Status Act 2000 to amend section 7(3) of that Act so that school admission policies in publicly funded schools may not discriminate against children on the basis of religious beliefs
