Trade Union (Garda Síochána and the Defence Forces) Bill 2017

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposal would let Garda and Defence Forces staff associations join or affiliate with trade unions or other groups, and would let Defence Forces members belong to an association that wants to become a trade union. It would also remove older rules that kept these groups outside some general industrial relations laws, while making clear they cannot use strike action where public safety would be put at risk.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to remove the bar on a Garda Síochána or Defence Forces association from associating with, or affiliating to, any trade union or any other association; to remove the bar on a Defence Force member from becoming a member of a Defence Force association that may wish to reconstitute itself as a trade union; and to prohibit the use of strike action by an Garda Síochána or Defence Forces associations and trade unions for reasons of public safety
