No. 73 of 2017

Criminal Justice (Commission of Sexual Offences) (Amendment) Bill 2017

Public bill · Private Member · Introduced

The proposed law would make repeat sex offenders face much tougher prison terms. If someone is convicted of one of the listed sexual offences, and then later commits another listed sexual offence within seven years, the court would generally have to impose at least three-quarters of the maximum sentence, or at least 10 years if the maximum is life, unless that would be unfair in the circumstances. The aim is to stop serial offenders who have not responded to rehabilitation and to give stronger protection and deterrence to the public.

Formal long title

Bill entitled an Act to amend the law in relation to sentencing in certain respects, to add certain sexual offences to Schedule 2 of the Criminal Justice Act 2007 and to provide for related matters
